Everyone knows just how healthy strawberry fruits are. But the question is, can you eat strawberry leaves? With most fruits, the epidermis or the outer skin is usually the healthiest portion of the fruit. And since the leaves are primarily what empower a plant, people are becoming more curious about the leaves of popular fruits like strawberries.
To Eat Or Not To Eat
Since I wasn't much of a tea drinker until a couple of years ago, finding out that eating strawberry leaves is possible came to me as a surprise. I love strawberries as a fruit but haven't known much about strawberry leaves until I came across a strawberry leaf tea sold at a local tea house.
I'm sure that not even a lot of people knows there's a strawberry tea since not a lot of tea houses sells them, but more and more people now are getting fascinated with the healthy benefits these leaves can bring.
How Healthy For You Are Strawberry Leaves?
You're probably wondering just what health benefits you can get from strawberry leaves. Here are some of them:
1. Better Digestive Health
Strawberry leaves help the digestive process by balancing acid and base compounds in the stomach, helping to break down food. Strawberry leaves contain tannins which are a biomolecule known to help bind proteins, amino acids, and alkaloids together.
They have shown to reduce acidity in the stomach. This is good news for people suffering from hyperacidity and dyspepsia, but also ideal for people suffering from stomach upsets, bloating, and even stomach cramps.

Strawberry leaves are rich in diuretic caffeic acid. This is a compound that can help remove water from the joints, therefore reducing inflammation. Inflamed joints are one of the main side effects of arthritis and also one of the main causes of joint pain.

Strawberry leaves are rich in vitamin C, iron, and calcium. These are all essential and beneficial to the body to maintain healthy bodily functions. Vitamin C is necessary to boost the immune system, iron for a healthy production of red blood cells and hemoglobin, and calcium for good bone health; thereby preventing osteoporosis and maintaining good teeth even as we age.

You would have heard of a plant's natural way to deter predators, in this case, pests. Strawberry leaves release hydrogen cyanide when they're picked. While this chemical will fade away on its own in due time, it's best to learn how to pick and dry your own leaves correctly before making your own tea, especially if you're planning to use it as fresh leaf rather than a dried one.
Don't let this deter you. As long as you wash these leaves properly, boil them well before drinking, and only use ones that you know to be free from any pesticide, then you don't have anything to fear.
Grow Your Own Fresh Strawberry Leaves Or Buy Them Dried.
How many places have you been to in the past year that sell fresh strawberry leaves? Hardly any, right? Buying fresh strawberry leaves can be tricky unless you live in an area where there are plenty of farms growing them. Also, only organic farms will have pesticide-free strawberry leaves.
Either you grow them or save yourself from all the trouble and just buy dried ones that are ready to be used as a tea. I go for both. I grow several pots in my yard as a hobby which I also use for my strawberry teas, but I also buy dried leaves.
Can You Eat Strawberry Leaves?
You might have noticed that I've only talked about using strawberry leaves as a tea in this article. While there are many ways to eat strawberry leaves, I'm only really comfortable using them as a tea and haven't tried them for and as anything else. I like them with either bit of honey or some brown sugar, whichever I have available.
